The Bog Garden, located in Greensboro, NC, is the perfect local getaway. It’s hard to believe it was once a landfill before a group of concerned citizens transformed it into this pristine environment brimming with wildlife.
As a biology major at UNCG, I went here for both field studies and just to take a break from the city. And in this guide, I’ll give you all the info you need to fully enjoy this natural space.
Overview
The Bog Garden is a 7-acre wetland area that was created to protect and showcase the unique ecosystem of the region. A local physician and resident noticed this land across from the Bicentennial Gardens in the late 1980s and organized a community effort to restore it, resulting in the creation of the Bog Garden.
The garden features a variety of plant species, including ferns, orchids, and carnivorous plants, which thrive in the wetland environment.
You can explore the garden via a winding boardwalk that takes you through the wetlands and leads to an observation area overlooking a lake, where you can see ducks and other birds as well as fish.
Before you visit, be sure to check out the trail guide so you can make the most of your trip. Admission is free and the park is open all year round.

Wildlife
The Bog Garden is home to a variety of wildlife. You can observe many different species of birds, including herons and ducks, as well as other types of wildlife such as turtles, fish, and frogs.
It also has an elevated boardwalk which provides an excellent view of the wetlands where these animals reside. Additionally, the garden is situated near a lake where visitors can relax and watch local aquatic wildlife.
Weddings
The Bog Garden is one of many Greensboro venues available for wedding ceremonies and other special events on a first-come, first-serve basis. To make a reservation, call 336-373-7690. You can also reserve online.
The garden features an elevated boardwalk which offers a beautiful and unique setting for a wedding ceremony. You can enjoy the lush and serene environment of the garden during their special day.
In addition to weddings, you can also hold other special events here by reserving a spot either online or by phone.
Parking
Parking is available on Starmount Farms Drive near the entrance to the Bog Garden, and there is plenty of free parking across Hobbs Rd in the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden.
