Morgantown also boasts some of the best golf courses in the country, from the fabled Pines Country Club to the picturesque courses of Lakeview Resort.

Pikewood National Golf Club

Pikewood National Golf Club is a world-class golf course located in Morgantown, WV, and prides itself on representing the golden age of golf. The course is only open to members and their guests, making it an exclusive and highly sought-after destination for avid golfers. The course is a walking-only course, which means that golfers must carry their bags or use a caddie. This adds to the traditional feel of the course and provides a unique and challenging golfing experience.

Pikewood has received numerous awards, including Golf Digest’s World’s 100 Greatest Courses, Golf Magazine’s Top 150 Courses in the World, and Golf Digest’s 2009 Best New Private Course.

Pines Country Club

The Pines Country Club golf course was designed by Ed Ault, who designed multiple courses throughout the country. Its 18 holes stretch over 6,670 yards from the back tees. The design features narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and fast greens that require precision and accuracy in every shot. In fact, their greens average 11.5-12 on the stimpmeter in season.

Because this course is part of the country club, it is membership only. The club offers several different golf leagues, including Junior Golf, Women’s League, and the Senior Men’s League. There are also events and a pro shop to stock up on golf supplies.

Outside of golf, the country club has a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, fine dining, and the chance to socialize with fellow members.

Mountaineer Golf Course

The Mountaineer Golf Course, opened in 1959, is a par 71 golf course suitable for any skill level. It features semi-fast greens that total a little over 5800 yards. The course also has excellent facilities, with over 50 golf carts available for rent.

Moutnaineer is also a great spot for business events and gatherings where you can enjoy golf. Its Mountaineer Room is available for rent and offers almost 2,700 square feet of meeting space. 

This is one of the best value courses on the list. Fees start as low as $17 for 9 holes and $22 for 18 holes. Memberships are also available to bring this cost down even more, if you play quite a bit.

Lakeview Golf Resort & Spa

The Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa in Morgantown, WV, is a golfer’s paradise nestled in the mountains. To get there, take exit 146 off I-79 and follow the signs to the resort. The resort offers two championship golf courses: the Mountainview Golf Course and the Lakeview Golf Course.

The Mountainview course was designed by Bryan Ault and is set against the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. Opened in 1985, this course covers 6,447 yards and is designed for all skill levels in mind. Golf Digest rates this course 3.5 stars.

The Lakeview course was designed by James Harrison and has been named among the top 100 golf courses in America. It is a challenging golf course with two signature holes. The 7th hole is 564 yards, drops 180 feet, and has beautiful views of surrounding Cheat Lake. The 18th hole is 620 yards, is a par 5, and has actually never been finished in 2.

Bel Meadow Golf Club

Designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., Bel Meadow is known for its challenging layout, breathtaking views, and exceptional playability.

Opened in 1966, the course features 18 holes and is a par 72. It offers a variety of different challenges, including tree-lined fairways, numerous water hazards, and strategically placed bunkers. The course is also home to several doglegs, making it a true test of a golfer’s skill and precision.

Bel Meadow is known for its exceptional greens, which are among the best in the area. The course is predominantly bentgrass, which provides a smooth and consistent surface for golfers to play on. The fairways and roughs are also well-maintained and provide a great playing experience.

In addition to the golf course, Bel Meadow also offers a fully-stocked pro shop, open from 8AM to 6PM daily. Bel Meadow is open to the public, so anyone can play here. Memberships are also available for those who want to play this course regularly. Tee times are required on Saturday and Sunday here, so plan accordingly if you’re hoping for a weekend game.

Golf fees are $25 for 9 holes with a cart, or $20 to walk. To play all 18 holes, fees start at $25 to walk or $32 with a cart.

Preston Country Club

This beautiful, historic course is actually built on land originally owned by George Washington. It is one of the longest golf courses in the state, with over 7,000 yards tucked away in the Allegheny Mountains. In addition to the course, they also have a Pro Shop that offers a full range of golf club repair services. There is also a restaurant, Rosemary’s Thyme, which cooks up classic, traditional Mexican favorites.

Membership as of 2023 is $1,275 per year, or $1,875 with unlimited use of the golf carts. 

Tygart Lake State Park

Tygart Lake Golf Course is a public golf course located in Grafton, West Virginia, just a short drive from Tygart Lake State Park. This 18-hole golf course offers a scenic and challenging golf experience for players of all skill levels. The course, which opened in 1967, is 6,255 yards in length and has a par of 72. It has a slope rating of 123 on Blue grass and a course rating of 69.8.

In addition to the course, the park has a bar with an awesome selection of beers and a sandwich shop so you can grab a quick bite to eat. 

Paradise Lake Golf Course

Paradise Lake offers 9 holes of golf and is open to the public. There isn’t much info available online for this course, but the address and phone number is available on their website so you can call to get info on times and rates.

Please note, there is a Paradise Lake course in Ohio as well, so when searching be careful that you found information on the correct golf course.

Alpine Lake Resort

Alpine Lake Resort Golf Course is a picturesque 18-hole course located in Terra Alta, West Virginia. Designed by golf architect Ron Forse, this course is 6,069 yards and has a par of 72. Its par 2, 3, and 4 holes provide challenging course conditions for skilled players.

The course is surrounded by beautiful views of the Appalachian Mountains, including the highest peak in West Virginia, Spruce Knob. The course is also home to an abundance of wildlife, including deer, wild turkeys, and various bird species.

The clubhouse features a fully stocked pro shop, as well as a restaurant and bar that overlooks the course. There is also a driving range, putting green, and chipping area for golfers to warm up before their round. After the game, you can enjoy the view of the lake and course on their outdoor deck overlooking the property. Other amenities at this resort include an indoor heated pool and stay and play packages for the perfect weekend escape.

The golfing as well as the dining are open to the public, although memberships for the resort are available too. The Pro Shop is open from 9AM to 4PM daily, weather permitting. Rates start at $30 with a cart for 9 holes and $44 with a cart for 18 holes.

The Resort at Glade Springs

The Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs is a unique golf course located in West Virginia that was designed by George Cobb, stretching over 7,121 yards with 51 sand bunkers, more than 200 feet of elevation change, and 8 lakes. 

This unique course is ranked frequently among the top 5 in West Virginia by Golf Digest and was named the #1 golf course in West Virginia in 2007 by Golf Magazine. It is such a good course, in fact, that it has hosted golf championships like the West Virginia Open and the NCAA National Championships.

The course is open to guests at the resort and members of the Glade Springs Golf and Country Club. Lessons are also available. Outside of golf, this resort has a world-class spa, the Spa Orange, which offers everything from full body massages to body and facial skin treatments. Accommodations and a range of dining options make for an easy stay. And a slew of different adventures, including Camp Glade for the kids, ensures that everyone in the family can have a good time here.

Fairmont Field Club

 The Fairmont Field Club hails all the way back to 1912 and was actually the founding site for the WV Golf Association. It is well known for tight fairways that challenge and delight players. 

The golf course also has a nice little Pro Shop open from 9AM to 8PM Monday through Thursday and 8AM to 8PM Friday through Sunday. The Pro Shop has a golf simulator too, which is a unique feature of this course.

Other club amenities include a pool, which is home to the Rock Lobsters swim team, pickleball, and a country club restaurant called Brickside on the Green.

Fairmont is open to the public, with rates starting at $20 for 9 holes and $40 for 18 holes. Memberships are available too for those who want to regularly enjoy everything Fairmont has to offer.
