Located in the heart of Irmo, South Carolina, Irmo Community Park is an urban oasis for locals and visitors alike. Surrounded by lush greenery and equipped with a full range of amenities, this park offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

I actually lived in Irmo for 3 years as a kid and went to Irmo Elementary School, so maybe you can say I’m a ‘local’!

  1. From your location, head south on I-26 W towards Exit 102A.
  2. Take exit 102A towards Irmo.
  3. Merge onto Lake Murray Blvd.
  4. Turn left onto St. Andrews Rd.
  5. Turn right onto Kennerly Rd.
  6. Turn left onto Eastview Dr.
  7. Irmo Community Park will be on your right.

Overview

The 16-acre patch of land for Irmo Community Park was bought by the city as a permanent home for the Okra Strut Festival. It was dedicated in May 2014 and has since become a popular gathering place for the town’s residents.

Throughout the year, the park is used for various activities, including evening runners and exercise groups. In 2023, a section of the walking trail was widened to provide more space for festival vendors.

The park is open from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. daily and is free for public use. Check out pics of the park here.

Amenities

The park has both an amphitheater and picnic shelters available for rent. Check the park’s policy and fees for more information before booking a rental.

There are also a wide variety of other facilities for visitors.

Prisma Health Amphitheater

The Prisma Health Amphitheater is located in the center of the park and can be rented out for events and festivals. Electricity is available.

Picnic Shelters

There are also two picnic shelters available for rent. These are great for birthday parties, family get togethers, or just a nice day at the park with friends. The Magnolia Shelter is located near the grassy field, while the Palmetto Shelter is located near the children’s garden.

Playgrounds

The park has a very spacious playground are with equipment for both big kids and smaller kids. There are slides, swings, climbing walls, a balancing log, and plenty of space for kids to roam and explore. Parents can enjoy a break on one of the many benches available at the playground area.

Walking Trails

Irmo Community Park also has beautiful walking trails that stroll through wooded areas, beautifully landscaped fields, and even a stream. There’s also an irrigation pond and, if you’re lucky, you might see one of the turtles that lives there.

Barbeque Grills

The park also has BBQ grills for public use. Visitors can bring their own food and use the grills to cook and enjoy a picnic in the park. Of course there are grills available at the picnic shelters available for rent.

Bathroom Facilities

Of course you’re not going to the park for the bathrooms, but it’s worth mentioning they have very nice facilities available. Especially for families with small kids, having nice bathrooms is important!

Events

There are also regular events held throughout the year at the park. Two big events are the Okra Strut Festival and the Irmo International Festival.

Okra Strut Festival

The Okra Strut Festival is an annual event that has been around for 50 years. It features live music, a parade, arts and crafts, rides, and lots of food and drinks. It is a two-day event that usually draws around 25,000 people, with up to 60,000 visitors in previous festivals.

The festival raises money for charitable contributions that go back into the community. It was initially organized as a fundraiser by the Lake Murray – Irmo Women’s Club to raise money for a new library.

Visitors can stay in nearby lodging options, including camping and boutique hotels. To keep up with all the events happening during the festival, visitors can follow their Facebook page or attend one of the volunteer meetings at Irmo Town Hall.

Irmo International Festival

The Irmo International Festival is an event that celebrates the rich variety of art, culture, food, and families of Irmo, South Carolina. The festival is held annually in Irmo Community Park.

Visitors can enjoy various activities such as live entertainment, food vendors, and shopping. There are also activities for the whole family, like games and free art activities.
