Blue Ridge Campground & Marina

Head to the Blue Ridge Mountains and experience the best of the outdoors at Blue Ridge Campground & RV Resort. They are located on Smith Mountain Lake, a beautiful 22,000-acre lake. Smith Mountain Lake has tons of activities, including beach parks, boating, fishing, and other water sports, and even nearby wineries. The lake is also close to three different entrances to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The campground has waterfront access. You can also enjoy hiking, volleyball, and picnics. And there is a playground for the kids! Full facilities are available, including restrooms with hot showers and laundry facilities. Hookups have water, sewer, and electric, and they also sell ice and are onsite.

Blue Ridge Campground is open annually from April 1 to October 31.

Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park

Located about 45 minutes from Blacksburg, Virginia, Highland Haven Airstream Park is a favorite among RV campers. They have a total of 46 sites, all of which have water, sewer, and 30 Amp electric hookups. The sites are well-equipped and comfortable, with concrete patios and free WiFi at every site. Propane is available for sale onsite, too, and you’re close to Floyd, VA, where you can go restock on supplies. Plus, Floyd is packed with great things to do!

The campground itself has miles of hiking trails, a cool waterfall to check out, a community fire ring, and a pavilion for group events.

Floyd Family Campground

Also located in Floyd, the Floyd Family Campground has a mixture of RV sites and tent camping. The RV sites have both 30 Amp and 50 Amp electric, although their most premium site, the Hilltop Dry Site, does not have hookups. Still, it has breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is one of the most highly sought-after sites on the campground. If you want to reserve this site, be sure to call them well in advance.

This campground has plenty of amenities to make your stay comfortable. There is a camp store where you can stock up on essentials, free WiFi, and firewood. They also have a disc golf course, and there are hiking trails too.

This campground is our favorite choice for families. There is a great little playground for the kids and also a Bark Park for the pup!

New River Junction

Established in 1982, New River Junction is a small, family-owned campground in the New River Valley. This pet-friendly campground is located just 13 miles from Blacksburg, Virginia. Big Falls Park is conveniently located nearby for visitors looking for picnicking and hiking options.

This tranquil location is particularly appealing for summer holidays, where you can enjoy riverfront cookouts and shuttle bus rides for boating and tubing adventures.

The 2023 tubing season at NRJ has ended. The camping season is open seven days a week from Easter to October 16. Reservations are necessary! 

The camping amenities include in-ground fire pits, picnic tables, dump stations, restrooms, hot showers, and an open-air pavilion with a deck offering stunning river views. Other recreational amenities include a basketball hoop and a horseshoe pit. The daily camping fee is $38.50. 

The campground managers are also open to discussing discounted rates if you’re planning a group outing or reunion.

Claytor Lake State Park

Claytor Lake State Park, located around 27 miles from Blacksburg, VA, is a perfect spot for a family RV trip. Claytor Lake is notably popular for sport fishing. This 4,500-acre lake is home to a variety of fish, making it an excellent angling destination. The park has a guarded beach, which is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. You’ll find a full-service marina with rentals, docking slips, fuel, supplies, and refreshments. 

The park offers picnic shelters, fishing piers, seasonal snack bars, hiking trails, and playgrounds for families with children. The park’s historic Howe House features interactive exhibits that provide insight into the lake’s ecology and surrounding areas. The Water’s Edge Meeting Facility is ideal for special events such as family reunions and weddings.

Claytor Lake State Park has a range of overnight accommodations. You can choose from camping, yurts, lodges, cabins, and even a camping lodge (bunkhouse). There are daily, weekly, and monthly rates available, with an extra fee per pet per night for cabin stays.

Claytor Lake State Park boasts numerous attractions nearby. You can see Cascades Waterfalls, Gatewood Park, and Dixie Caverns or immerse themselves in local culture at the Floyd Country Store and Draper Mercantile.

New River Trail State Park

Spanning 1,320 acres, New River Trail State Park is 48 miles away from Blacksburg, VA. The New River Trail State Park is a spectacular “Rails to Trails” initiative that meanders through Carroll, Wythe, Grayson, and Pulaski counties. The trail begins at the southern end in Galax and extends 57 miles to the town of Pulaski in the New River Valley. 

Hiking routes in the park offer breathtaking views of the New River and lush forested landscapes. Notably, you’ll encounter two well-preserved railroad tunnels covered in decades of decorations and graffiti. If you want to bring your four-legged buddy, the park is pet-friendly.

Boating is a popular activity here, with accessible and free boat ramps in Austinville, Allisonia, and Foster Falls. Swimming is not allowed, but you can enjoy the river by floating on an inner tube. If you don’t have your own boat, the park rents canoes and kayaks. 

The park is ideal for equestrians, with guided trail rides available seasonally through the Foster Falls Horse Livery. Most hiking trails are open to horses all year round.

If you want to camp in New River Trail State Park, there are three primitive campgrounds to choose from: Double Shoals, Cliffview, and Millrace. However, it is important to note that these campsites lack vehicular access and do not have showers or bathhouses.

Middle Creek Campground
