I grew up in Mocksville, just outside of Winston, so I know this area well. Winston is packed with outdoor activities, like mountain biking, hiking, and even scuba diving and rock climbing. It’s also got plenty of great restaurants and shopping. If you’re looking for a nice stroll through the city, be sure to check out the Fourth Street Area downtown.

Salem Breeze RV Park
Location: 2784 Hickory Tree Rd, Winston Salem, NC 27127
The Salem Breeze RV Park one of Winston’s most popular RV parks. It’s located just minutes away from popular attractions, such as the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Old Salem Museums & Gardens, and Wake Forest University. There are also many dining and shopping options nearby.
The campground offers a range of RV sites to accommodate different types and sizes of recreational vehicles. These spacious sites offer full hookups, including water, sewer, and electricity. They also offer Direct TV and high-speed internet access.
The park features a variety of amenities to enhance the RV camping experience. There is a clubhouse with a kitchen and a TV lounge, making it a perfect place to socialize with fellow campers. Other amenities include laundry facilities, clean restrooms, and showers.
Salem Breeze RV Park is pet-friendly, so bring your furry friends along on your RV adventure. There is even a fenced dog park where your pets can run and play.

Jomeokee Campground
Location: 1140 Paces Place Road, Pinnacle, NC 27043
Jomeokee Campground is an excellent choice for campers looking for a peaceful and scenic camping destination with modern amenities and plenty of outdoor activities. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a first-timer, you’re bound to have a good time at Jomeokee Campground.
One of the highlights of Jomeokee Campground is its location. The campground is situated near Pilot Mountain State Park, a popular destination for hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife watching.
The campground itself is surrounded by lush forests and offers breathtaking views of the nearby mountains. They are also close to Hanging Rock and the charming towns of Pilot Mountain and Mt. Airy.
The RV sites are spacious and equipped with full hookups, including water, sewer, and electricity. Jomeokee also offers a range of amenities, like bathrooms and hot showers, picnic shelters, fire rings, and a propane filling station.
Thousand Trails Forest Lake
Location: 192 Thousand Trails Drive Advance, NC 27006
Thousand Trails is a network of private campgrounds and RV parks located throughout the United States, including one in Winston. The Winston-Salem campground is called Forest Lake RV & Camping Resort and is located on a beautiful wooded property that offers a peaceful and scenic setting for camping and outdoor activities.
The Forest Lake RV & Camping Resort features a variety of camping options. The RV sites are equipped with water and 30 am 50 amp, and sewer is also sometimes available at check-in.
Thousand Trails offers by far the most amenities out of any site on this list. The basics are of course fully covered here, like restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and wifi.
But they also have a swimming pool, volleyball and tennis courts, a lake for fishing and boating, hiking trails, a restaurant, and a clubhouse with games and activities.
Thousand Trails is pet friendly. If you’re traveling with your furry friend, there is a dog park onsite so you can let them run around.
As of 2023, prices are $54 per night or $46 per night if you rent weekly. In addition to RV camping, there are a total of 283 tent sites and 18 cabins available for rent.
Tanglewood RV Campground
Location: 4061 Clemmons Rd, Clemmons, NC 27012
Tanglewood Park Campground is just outside of Winston, in Clemmons. It offers a peaceful and family-friendly environment. For 2023, the RV Campground season runs from March 1st to December 4th. This campground features spacious, well-maintained RV sites with electric and water hookups.
The campground is located within a 1,100-acre park surrounded by undulating hills, natural forests, and open meadows along the Yadkin River. Guests can enjoy endless activities like picnics, golf, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, and boating.
If you want a more luxurious experience, the nearby Manor House Bed and Breakfast offers an elegant stay next to the Arboretum and gardens. What makes Tanglewood special is its peaceful seclusion from the park’s playgrounds and sports facilities. However, campers still have convenient access to all of these amenities.
The campground has the additional perk of staying open for the first three weeks of the Christmas Festival of Lights, which you’ve got to see if you’re in the area. It is an extremely popular event and one I grew up going to at least some years during Christmas.
Hanging Rock State Park
Location: 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road, Danbury, North Carolina 27016
Hanging Rock State Park, located about 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, is a haven for nature lovers. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts due to its stunning waterfalls and broad mountain views.
The park, which spans over 9,000 acres of sloping terrain, is home to rocky, rugged cliffs, outcrops, and extensive woodlands. When I was in school in Chapel Hill, I got the chance to go rock climbing here and it was great!
Obviously rock climbing is just one of many activities you can enjoy here. Others include fishing and swimming in the Swim Lake, kayaking, tubing, and boating down the Dan River.
Lower Cascades Falls, located just beyond the park’s gates, is a beautiful waterfall only a short hike away. There are tons of other hikes here too, of course.
If you want to launch a boat on the Dan River or go on walks like the River Bluffs Trail or the Indian Creek Trail, the Dan River Access is your starting point. You can also explore a stunning five-peak trek directly from the campground or find scenic picnic spots.
Camping in Hanging Rock State Park is a popular choice as it allows them to explore the park at their own pace and enjoy amenities such as a seasonal bathhouse, visitor center, exhibits, and many more. The camping option includes tent sites, vacation cabins, trailer and RV sites (no hookups), and amenities like showers and firewood.
Lake Myers RV Resort Park
Location: 2862 Highway 64 W, Mocksville, North Carolina
Lake Myers RV Resort is a spacious and well-equipped family-oriented location in North Carolina, located 28 miles from Winston Salem, in Mocksville. Lake Myers also happens to be the location of my first job, at the ripe old age of 15. I worked there as a lifeguard and can tell you from experience this is a popular place!
This North Carolina RV park offers a wide range of interests, including bumper boats, canoes, water slides, paddle boats, and an outdoor swimming pool for leisure. Other activities include arcade games, miniature golf, roller skating, horseshoe pits, basketball courts, and picnic shelters.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extended seasonal stay, they offer overnight and extended camping options with full hookup sites. Their spacious RV park can accommodate even the largest RVs.
In addition to RVs, they also offer Villa and Cabin rentals that sleep up to eight people and include all of the amenities, such as bedding, appliances, cookware, and even full bathrooms with showers.
Greensboro KOA
Location: 1896 Trox Street, Greensboro, North Carolina 27406
The Greensboro KOA, just a short drive from Winston-Salem, provides an idyllic escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Full hookups, free WiFi, a swimming pool, lounge, gaming room, playground, and dog park make the park an excellent choice for families and individuals looking for a pleasant RV experience.
No matter your camping style, you’ll find suitable accommodations. They offer pull-through RV sites with full hookups, 50/30 amps, and electric hookups for campervans and pop-up trailers. Nearby attractions include the Greensboro Science Center and the International Civil Rights Center & Museum.
Greensboro KOA is pet friendly. The dog park is perfect for your four-legged friends. What makes Greensboro KOA appealing is the convenience it offers. They provide a dump station and a propane filling station on the premises, which can help reduce the stress of RV travel.
Mayberry Campground
Location: 114 Byron Bunker LN Mount Airy, North Carolina 27030
Mayberry Campground is a wonderful, family-oriented RV park located in Mount Airy, only 38 miles north of Winston-Salem. They have 106 campsites, each with full hookups, cable TV, and WiFi access. They also offer a spacious picnic shelter with a full kitchen and four smaller shelters that are ideal for large gatherings.
On-site activities include fishing and a lovely walking trail leading to The White Plains Church, where the renowned Siamese Twins, Chang Bunker and Eng Bunker, are laid to rest. Additional amenities include communal grills, a laundry facility, a playground, fire pits, and biking trails.
The central position of this campground makes it ideal for exploring Pilot Mountain, Mayberry RFD (Mt. Airy), and the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway. In addition, the world’s largest open-face granite quarry is nearby for further exploration and enjoyment.
Mayberry Campground charges $45.00 per day. They also have a weekly cost where you can pay for 6 nights and get the 7th night free.
